Sabine Spires

In life we accumulate baggage, often in the shape of hurt, leading to mistrust and isolation. As long as we can, we try to ignore the weight in our rucksack and carry on. Sometimes it feels like every step is getting heavier and heavier, just going through the day to day motions, until moving forward feels almost impossible.

For me working with a counsellor is the opportunity to unpack some of the baggage with someone who is kind, doesn’t judge, and provides you with the feeling of safety. It’s not about emptying the rucksack completely, sometimes it’s enough to acknowledge that it is full, and maybe take a few things out. Counselling is a process during which you can learn to trust yourself again supported by someone who you are daring to learn to trust.

I am trained as an integrative counsellor, integrating Person Centered and Psychodynamic Theory. This means that I believe that we all intrinsically know what we need. I will listen and be guided by you, exploring the content of your rucksack. I also believe that we have learned coping mechanisms in relating to others and ourselves which might not serve us anymore, or even hinder us to build healthy, supportive relationships. I will sometimes relate my observations of your story to theories about how humans interact and how our brain functions. This can help you to increase your understanding of your emotions, behaviour, and way of relating. I am here to support you to gain a better insight into yourself in relation to your personal history and current environment.

I came to be a counsellor in the stage of my life when a lot of things changed and I lost my footing. Our children became independent, I moved country and gave up my career as an engineer. When I moved, my rucksack was too heavy and I felt I didn’t have a solid base. My personal counselling and my counselling training has helped me to root down again and unpack some of my baggage.

Looking for a counsellor can be a daunting process. I would like to encourage you to go with your gut feeling, choose someone you can relate to and feel comfortable with. I you would like to get to know me, I offer a free 30 minutes phone or video call. If you rather meet face to face, you can book a 30 minutes session for £20 taking place at The Centre of The Hills.
